Whats going on this year

So this is my blog, its going to full of information about whats going on with me as i try to make my way thorugh my final year in Nottingham. It will include details of my PRP and of my client project, but its also going to be a little bit fun!! Enjoy xx

Personal Research Project

This is an individual research project, aka - my PRP. During the course of the year i will be studying the subject of VOYOUISM. Looking into how it is used across the different mediums and how it effects our society in the way it is portrayed through the media, paying particular interest into the music video industory.

Client Project

For this i will be creating Compound. Along with my two team mates, James and Huw we will be establishing a media production company and tackling the challenges that it throws up along the way, you've guessed it, its called compound!

Compound Update

well, we are in businees, sold the first lot of fashion dvd's - that is a compleated project now. we had a meeting to discuss plans for over christmas, project / company roles, discussed issues involving manegement etc - all turned out ok, i think every one is abit stressed at the moment.

discussed ideas for this pitch / proposal / presentation thing what ever it is! got some cool ideas of what were going to put on the screens, but it is all very top secret!!

and finally, we all went for dinner lastnight - the compound christmas dinner! was really nice, tried not to talk about work too much, was quite relaxing really - i love those guys!! x

Last SPP before Christmas

Well, SPP today was actually really productive - by the end! during the lecture there was a massive debate, as usual, and i got really stressed, as usuall and shouted abit and put forward my p.o.v - as usual!! we basically re-organised the individual grops saying they dont need to be scared to make desision, and they are in that group for a reason blah blah blah!!

Seminar was much more productive, we had a big meeting after an initial deiscussion and ended up creating 5 small 'brak out' groups whicj include - sound, lighting, film, layout and asthetics - of course i am in asthetics, i love making things look pretty, but we have got 2 boys in it aswell so the exhibition shouldnt turn out all pink!

not doing any work for this over christmas, im enjoying myself - well in the few seconds per day im not doing PRP!!!

Untill January Spp.......... happy Christmas and goodbye!!!! xx

Getting Artey

well, these last few days have been really good as far as primary research goes for PRP. i went to this show on friday called 'Paula is a Slut' - it was really quite moving, it has an MA performing arts student, she was basically doing a performance peice that was a sale of her emotions. she had been treated badly by loads of guys and to start a fresh life she was wrapping up her memorys in a box and giving them away. not sure how it relates to my research, maybe the feminist angel of how women are looked at and viewed within society. but it was a good show, and i chatted to her afterwards, ive got her email and blog adress so i will drop her and email and some questions.

Kelly and Handcock

well, i went to angel row gallary a few weeks ago to see an on going peice of work that they are doing, which involves patteren and one of the artists is having a tatoo of wall paper done on her back. but this was a different show, i will explain more in my prpr, but it was basically i semi naked gut, laying on a peice of metal and a lady was twineing his hair into the metal so he couldnt move, very enclosed space very voyouristic - so perfect. i need to email them aswell.

1st Course Party

woooooooooo wooooooo wooooooo!!!!

Well, we did it, the party went ahead, at scream and it was great! the day started off badly with no tickets sold so Emma, Huw and myself took tickets into our seminars and basically didnt let people leave until they had brought a ticket! harsh but fair! the 3 of us then went on to give the course lecture, very scary! talking about issues that we thought had gone wrong involving structure, ideas and lack of atendence! it went well, and again, more tickets sold. by the end of the day we had sold 80 tickets, not bad.

so the night, i arived and things got kicking, me ansd patrick went on the hunt downstairs in scream to sell some more tickets, i wore a low cut top, did some flirting, and patrick took a more responsible aproach! it worked! the response was great and we ended up selling 170 tickets in the end, which raised £600 pounds for our exhibition, really good result, and a great start.

the night was loads of fun, i met loads of the 3rd years that io didnt know, did some bonding, got rather tipsy on wine, the bands were great - in general, a really good night, and for a good cause, im looking forward to the next one - but hopefully wont have the stress of helping to organize it!! xx

exhibition design

Well, today i went to the 100+ exhibition in Boddington building. it was much as i expected, a white room, very spaceious with individual stands for peoples work. it actually gave me alot of inspiration and ideas of what to do in terms of colour, layout and spacing, aswell as some tips of what NOT to do!

it was amazing to see how a simple colour scheme could be the difference between a good stand and a bad one, and the smallest of details mattered, asin, where abouts on their stand they pout their poster! of course, i was only looking at it from an asthetics point of view. below are some photos of some ideas i got from the exhibition, i especially love the stand that has alot of coloured plastic - it looked funky and modern, much the feel that i would like our exhibition to have.

i also collected alot of the students bussiness cards, not only for bussiness card inspirartion, but we also plan to advertise the exhibition on bussiness ard siz flyers, so i thought it would be good to look at the scale of objects / writinf / layout etc.

at some point, hopefully before tuesday im planning to make a creative board of all the images of the exhibition to take design ideas form. i also made a list of materials, equipment, information needed for all things exhibition related, incliding things like wood for buliding, screens, room bookings, equipmeny needed etc. so hopefully this tuesday will be more sucessfull then the last and i will actually be able to chat about EXHIBITION DESIGN!!!!

also, i sorted out the tickets for jan and sent some more emails!! the event - MILK - is going ahead on tuesday - woo woo, course bonding!!!

prp - meeting with Huw

i know this is a little late, but time flys etc! well on friday i had a meeting with huw, my personal tutor to discuss how my research is going, etc. well we ended up going for coffie - as huw said coffie is a part of life, as is my research project!!

i always get excited about seeing Huw, he is so inspiering, and has so much knowledge about the most random, but relevent subjects! i drew him a visual plan of my research, which constructs of about 20 folders of topics on my computer and complained of how i am turing into abit of a reclous and living and breathing my prp!!

we discussed artists and he refered me to ther show sensations - aparently it has alot to do with one artist and his use of scale in objects which changes the context - i need to look that up!

we discussed my primary research - im a little worried as voyerism isnt really a subject or and object - its a theory so how do i aproach that?? also its abit of a sensitive subject area! im going to try and get in touch with some photographers and maybe docters / phyciatrists.

ideas for protoype also came up - think i am going to go with a montage of images that represent voyourism - like a still image music video?? my project is so much more then music videos now!!!

well thats about it, very good meeting, lots of new things to think about - including art - Jackson Pollack??

oh dear, my brain hurts!

tuesady 28th nov, spp seminar

well, oh dear, this is not going to be a fun entery!! well, last week i was elected, well, kind of volentered to be the exhibition design rep, alongside a guy called Jay harwood. so, in prepeeration for the meeting me and Jay met up and had a 4 hour meeting on what we think the design for the exhibition should be, including asthetics, layout, rooms etc. i was really pleased with the outcome and we decided on putting the idea of themes, coloured rooms, with corridors leading into them to the group.

so tuesday afternoon arives, we have the lecture and i arive at my EXHIBITION DESIGN seminar, i spoke about the designs for 5 mins and the issue of the course night out, which is happenine THIS tuesday came up. turns out FUNDRAISING and SPONSERSHIP, the people in charge had done nothing, no posters up, no tickets, no bands and a semi answer on the venue........ what is going on! so about 4 people as usual in the group spoke, 90% of the people left and about 5 of us sat down with dave, designed tickets, went to see the maneger of scream and put together a comitte. i dont mind, but we ended up staying for almost 4 hours and thats not even our department!

so thats my little rant! i am picking up the tickets 2morrow, me, james and patrick saw jan today and sent out emails to the course and i am going into 1st/2nd year lectures to sort out tickets for them! fun fun fun!!

dave also asked me to put a list together for all things we need for the exhibition so i am going to the 100+ exhibition tomorrow to take notes and get some inspirartion.

update tomorrow.......(hopefully with some better news!!)

The first stages of PRP

So my PRP, well as i said before, i had so many problems in deciding what to do for this project, but i had narrowed it down to the field of music videos. i had a meeting with Jools and we established that i would like to go into music video directing, so the logical research project to do would be looking into how to become a music video director. So i started looking into MTV and different directing styles ect, but found that it want really interesting me enough, and alaso that the areas of research were quite limited.

I finally met up with my personal tutor, Huw Feather, and we decided that music video directing was not the way to go, but instead to look into the traits of music videos. Going back to the subject of voyerism i decided that this was an area that i wanted to concentrate on, hence how i got my title - 'How much influenec does voyourism have within the music video industry?'

So i had my title, next was the proposal. The deadline was within the first 2 weeks of us starting back so i had a lot of late nights trying to fit it all in. i looked at films, photographers, music videos, music aritists, the legal side and much much more! My proposal ended up being 18 pages long, very hard, but worth it, im really pleased with the results.

So thats it, proposal in, theres not another deadline until January, but its another big one, so onward with the research, but thats another entry!!

The fasion show

Well we took three camara down to oceana, set up and started filming! it lasted about 3 hours, we had 1 overhead camara, one by the front of the stage, cpturing the stage enterence and the posing, and a reverse shot of the runway. the final camara was set up at the bottom of the runway, capturing the walk down and the poseing at the end.
The footage was then edited into a dvd, compleate with music, photos and a mix of all the camara views - our first compleate project - a great sucess!

First week back at uni

Well, i can still remember this, i had hardly unpacked my things into my news house and James was Knocking at my door with a compound t-shirt telling me that we had to film the freshers at the union! so we went down, set up and started film, we went around documentary style, shots of the dance floor, waving at camaras and lots of photos, it was mad, and that pretty much happend all week long! its amazing what people will do to get on camara!

So we had our company, we had our t-shirts and we had our audience, we were well on our way to starting up our media company. When we were out filming we were getting quite alot of atention and James got aprached by a girl called Sam who is doing a fashion degeee and was organising a fashion show for the students, her and James had a meeting and we aranged to to film their fashion show at oceana. Our first real client - YES!!!!

Preparing for the final year

Lets take you back to how it all began. During my placement year in Oxford i started thinking about what my final year projects would be and having kept in good contact with James and Huw we were regularing keeping each other informed of what we were up to, and decided that we all wanted to achieve simlar goals for the final year and decided that it would be a good idea to work together for the client project to set up our own media production company. Lots of chats, debates and a few arguments took place and we finally came up with the company name 'Compound'. Huw found it and thought it would be perfect as the definition is something like 3 particals coming together to form a solid bond - well, it worked for me!

So we had our name, and our idea, that was one project sorted, but what about the other. Well the Personal research Project, aka PRP was alot more individual then the client, infact, it is totally independant. After having many discussions with Danny Kaye, my company and my friends i decided that no matter what i did i had to enjoy it, and i mean with a passion. this research project was going to be huge and knowing what im like if i wasnt interested in the subject the project was not going to be a sucess.

Much brainstorming happened over the next fews weeks and i decided to revisit a suject area that i had first studyed during my A-Levels - the music video. i love music, and escecially enjoy music video and have always been intriuged on how they are made and what draws people into them. I remember one area that i was particulary interested in was the use of Voyerism - or so i thought it was at the time, i have now realised that it was probably just sex apeal, but there is a fine line, which i know all too well about now!

So it was decided, i was going to research into the styles of music videos for my PRP and set up a media company for my client, easy............... oh no its not!

Lets Catch Up

Wow, it really has been too long

Well before we launch right into the last 2 months of my life i will just let you know what this is all about. Ive just started my final Year at uni, ive been away on placement in oxford for the last year, which was an amzing experience, living in another city for a year, being a student with different students, and of course lots of work aswell, 9 - 5, its pretty tough!

Well that year seems so long ago now, im back in Nottingham and luving it more than ever, and going to lectures again almost seeems a little weird!

So this is basically my 'Blog', and it will be very up to date from now on, after ive recovered from the shock of schoool work and essays and DEADLINES!!

Enjoy xxx
